Partners of HIU

The HIU operates on verious battery research fields; from excellent basic research to the application level. In addition, it is expanding teaching and promotes young talents together with its partners in Ulm and Karlsruhe.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

The KIT uniquely combines the traditions of a renowned technical university and an important large-scale research facility. In doing so, the KIT sees its responsibility to contribute through research and teaching to sustainable solutions of major tasks in society, economy and environment. The KIT uses its financial and human resources with the best possible effectiveness. The development of future-oriented technologies and their use in business and society is one of the cornerstones of KIT.

KIT is considered to be a leader in the development of fundamentally new electrochemical storage concepts and the synthesis and investigation of the storage materials and electrolytes required for this. It also has recognized expertise and state-of-the-art methods for the structural, chemical and electrochemical characterization of materials and cells as well as for higher-level system analyzes.

Ulm University

The HIU building is located in the middle of the Science Park, the Ulm University campus. The University of Ulm is a university “in the countryside” and part of an economically strong dynamic region. It is an important source of inspiration for the science city of Ulm and a partner in numerous collaborations with industry, business and other institutions, regionally, nationally and internationally. Ulm University is dedicated to 12 strategic research topics, most of which are interdisciplinary. Important research areas are the life sciences and medicine, bio, nano and energy materials, financial services and their mathematical methods as well as information, communication and quantum technologies.

The focus of the research groups at Ulm University is on the investigation of electrochemical principles and the modeling of elementary processes on electrode surfaces as well as in the interior of the material.

Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research

The state of Baden-Württemberg founded the ZSW in 1988 together with universities, research institutions and companies as a non-profit foundation under civil law. Solar energy and hydrogen technologies are currently growing on an industrial scale into building blocks for a sustainable energy supply for the 21st century. The following points are derived from this:

The aim of the work of the ZSW is the research and development of technologies for the sustainable and climate-friendly supply of electricity, heat and renewable fuels.

The ZSW has been researching battery materials successfully and in an application-oriented manner for decades, developing new cells and testing the suitability of batteries for everyday use in close cooperation with industry. The ZSW is an associated partner and founding member of the HIU.

German Aerospace Center

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the research center of the Federal Republic of Germany for aerospace, energy technology, traffic and safety in the field of applied sciences and basic research. It is represented at 26 locations in Germany and 4 offices abroad. In its research and development work, DLR cooperates with other research institutions and industry worldwide.

DLR has a high level of competence in the development of new storage materials, in the development and application of mathematical models and simulations on the scale of entire battery cells, and in system development. DLR is an associated partner and founding member of the HIU.
